When the republic of Liberia was established in 1842, the founding fathers realized the proclamation of the gospel would be a first priority for their prosperity. Mission agencies and church groups were invited to establish houses of worship, schools and health facilities. Liberia became a Christian country. However, during the 25 years of strife and war in the late 20th century, the gospel suffered a serious setback. While many African countries have been overrun by Islam, Liberia still remains very open to receiving the gospel.

One of the purpose statements of Jesus was, “…to preach the gospel to the poor.” Perry Smith has heard the Lord say, “Behold I have set before you an open door.” He has dedicated his life to entering Liberia primarily through the door of elementary education. He was able to open a small school in River Cess in 2010 and another in Monrovia a few years later. Now, in just ten years these humble beginnings have grown into a combined enrollment of nearly 200 students. At the present rate of growth, the next ten years will potentially witness almost 1,000 students enrolled, receiving the gospel, and a wonderful faith-based, values-based education in Liberia through PGS Lutheran Mission Church and School.
